Quintessentially British Weekend: Afternoon tea edition
Quintessentially British Weekend:
Afternoon tea edition
In 2022, Her Majesty The Queen becomes the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, seventy years of service since she became The Queen on 6 February 1952. There will be events and celebrations throughout the year however for me the highlight of celebrations is an extended bank holiday (I mean who doesn’t like an extra day off?!). I’m not British and I don’t get excited about an idea to organise a street party but what I certainly got into after years of living in London is a slow afternoon spend over an a cup of good tea accompanied by a glass of champagne, finger sandwiches, scones and mini cakes. But how to choose where to enjoy this very British tradition when they very in price, ‘poshness’ and quality so much.
Here is my three not-to-miss Afternoon Teas in London.
1. Diamond Jubilee Tearoom at Fortnum & Mason
An absolute icon of afternoon teas. Opened exactly ten years ago for HM Diamond Jubilee this tearoom is very elegant and serves the most traditional sets alongside ‘Savoury Afternoon Tea’ or Vegetarian option. Live background piano music and staff trained to perfection in every detail are both beautiful additions to the atmosphere.
2. The Orchid Lounge at Pan Pacific London
If you like things with a twist I can’t recommend The Orchid Lounge more. Served inside the signature Afternoon Tea birdcage, this Afternoon Tea offers you two choices: traditional or Asian inspired Kopi Tiam option. The experience begins with a regal selection of Dim Sums, Gai Gok and Baos followed by traditional scones.
This extra special service also includes playful touches: a tea and biscuit flavoured amuse bouche, street party-inspired Candy Floss and a Corgi Dog Shortbread.
3. The Library at Marriott County Hall
Served in the magnificent surroundings of the Grade II Listed Library, which is home to over 3,000 original books, with front row views of the iconic Elizabeth Tower, the Afternoon Tea menu features delectable Big Ben inspired creations. For those wanting to gaze at the newly restored landmark in closer detail, binoculars and telescopes are also available to accompany the afternoon tea experience.
And a little surprise. In June, to celebrate the Jubilee, all visitors named Elizabeth will enjoy a Big Ben afternoon tea for free (T&Cs apply).
